This is accomplished through the use of transformers/rectifiers, which supply direct current to specially designed anodes capable of dissipating substantial currents without significant wastage. These systems are known as impressed current systems, and their major components include rectifiers, positive and negative cables, anodes, and, when applicable to soil environments, carbon "coke" backfill.
